Gundagai to Canberra 7th June 2010

Before leaving Gundagai we visited the Information Centre where "Rusconi's Marble Masterpiece" is on display. It is truly a magnificent achievement. Here is the story behind it's construction - A unique Gundagai attraction is a miniature cathedral, sculpted by monumental mason Frank Rusconi. ‘Rusconi’s Marble Masterpiece’ took him 28 years of spare time work to create. It contains 20,948 individual pieces of marble, each one cut, turned and polished by hand. Every piece of marble is sourced from NSW, and the model was intended to showcase the beauty of NSW marbles, which Frank Rusconi maintained equaled more widely-known European marbles for beauty & utility.

Another Rusconi creation is a small replica of the alter of Saint Marie’s Cathedral in Paris. Rusconi & 3 other men constructed the original altar while he was working in Switzerland. On returning to Australia he created the miniature replica from marble collected from around Australia, working four hrs. a day for 7 years.

Frank Rusconi was instrumental in the creation of the Dog on the Tuckerbox and he sculpted its original plinth.
